Student Announcements - Friday, January 25, 2013 Day B

1) Sports Today - Boys Gold Basketball...Roosevelt Purple vs. Jefferson Gold. 7th grade at Jefferson and 8th grade at Roosevelt; both games begin at 4 p.m.

2) Birthdays Today - January 25th...Mason Henning, Jesse Key, Joshua Wharton. January 26th...Adam Kuennen, Kaylee Olson, Sierra Sanchez. January 27th...Ethan Healey.

3) Leap Broomball is today. It is held at the Mystique Ice Arena and transportation is provided. Please dress appropriately, as it is on ice. First come, are the first to go.

4) Jefferson had great representation last night at the sectional spelling bee at Clarke University. Zaebian Weis and Carly Dalberg had great performances against some excellent competition. Emma Wiebke and Brianna Heffner both competed in the recall round to determine the final two contestants for the regional spelling bee. Brianna was the final speller eliminated from the sectional bee, just missing advancing to regionals. Congratulations to Cody Bartels who will be representing Jefferson at the regional spelling bee at Clarke University on March 9th.

Morning Arrival As another update to our safety and security procedures at Jefferson, all students will enter the building in the morning through the main doors in the front of school. This new procedure will take effect on Tuesday, January 22nd. Students will enter through the main doors starting at 7:30 am and go to their assigned hallway areas until the bell rings at 8:42 am. Students eating breakfast will also need to use the front door to enter the building and then go to the cafeteria. The door directly to the kitchen will be locked and will not be used as an entrance to the building for students.

1) Auditions for this year's musical, "Annie," will be today from 2:30-4:00 in the auditorium. If you are interested in an acting part in the musical, you must come to this audition today.

2) Auditions for this year's musical, "Annie," will be Wednesday and Thursday, January 23rd and 24th, from 2:30-4:00 in the auditorium. If you are interested in an acting part in the musical, you must come to one of these audition times.

3) All students involved in the talent show will eat lunch at 10:45 today (Friday.) Please excuse them at that time to report to the lunchroom, where the kitchen staff is expecting them. This is necessary to allow these students time to eat and get ready for the talent show at 11:30.

Dubuque Sports & Recreation Festival The Dubuque Sports & Recreation Festival will be held on Saturday January 19th from 9:00 to 3:00 at the Grand River Center. The festival gives attendees the opportunity to learn more about the many sports teams & leagues and recreational opportunities available in Dubuque. The festival offers a family fun atmosphere with many activities for attendees including a bounce house, obstacle course, jousting pit, soccer kick, archery, golf, stage performances, the Dubuque Community Speed Stacking competition and more. 1) Belin-Blank recommendations need to be turned in to Ms. Weber by the end of the day on Thursday, January 17th.

2) Any student that is not on a roster for an after school sport is not permitted in the locker rooms for any reason after the dismissal bell. Students should not be using gym lockers for any reason other than gym clothes or storing personal items while participating in an after school sport.

3) There will be no drama club on Thursday this week. Drama club normally meets Mondays and Thursdays at 11:00 or 11:45 and Wednesdays after school at 2:30. Drama Club is open to anyone. You can come to one session a week or all three options.

2) Any students wanting to be members of the dance team or boys basketball teams, practices have already started. You need to have a physical and concussion form on file. If you do not have these on file with the main office you cannot attend practice. Get this taken care of by today.

3) A reminder to all students...LEAP programs are starting January 14th. Get your registration turned in today!

4) Good luck to all students who are taking the Winter MAP tests. They are a great way to show your teachers how much you know.

If we have a large enough number interested we will try to set up an after school club as well.

DARE Ski Night The DARE Ski/Snow Board Night is tonight at Sundown. Registration is between 4-6 P.M. Participant can ski until closing. Costs are: $13.00 for a lift ticket only. $18.00 for a Lift ticket, ski rental and a lesson. $24.00 for a lift ticket, snow board rental and a lesson. This is not a chaperoned event, so children should not come alone.

5) A reminder to all students...Grades are due this Friday. Progress Reports will be run on Monday, January 14th.

6) MathCounts will be meeting today afterschool from 2:30-3:30 in Mr. Meier's room. This is an important meeting to attend as you will be taking a practice test for the competition. If you have any questions, see Mr. Meier in Room 107.

8) Congratulations to two 8th grade students who won prizes in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest.  Michaela Uptegraph's essay won first place.  Mia Burns' essay won second place.  Congratulations ladies!

2) YCF will meet today (Tuesday) during 5th period, and students will eat lunch during advisory. We will split up into 3 groups as follows: Local Issue(school lunches) in room 06 with Mrs. Haverland, National Issue (year-round schooling) in room 273 with Ms. Weber, and International Issue (animal treatment) in room 207 with Ms. Thimmesch.

1) New LEAP programs beginning second semester. Make sure you are signed up today! Two new programs to pay special attention to are Bridge Club and NASA. Bridge is where you can test your wits and learn how to be a professional Bridge player. The NASA class will teach you about rocketry and aeronautics. There may be opportunities to fly in a real plane. Make sure you have a parent sign both sides of the Leap form. If a form is needed, stop by the main office.
